Area Police
Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official stated the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
